What is a bivouac?

A bivouac is a night spent out in the open, without any permanent structures: a light tent, pitched after sunset and dismantled before sunrise, in an inconspicuous spot, for a single night.

This is not wild camping! The latter often involves heavier installations and prolonged parking, and can have a negative impact on the environment.

Bivouacking is a great way to discover the Morvan in depth... as long as you do it with discretion, respect and common sense.

Where to bivouac in the Morvan?

Bivouacs are permitted in the Morvan, with the agreement of the landowner, except in certain protected or regulated areas.

Areas where bivouacking is prohibited:

  • In listed or registered sites and in areas where historic monuments are protected, within 500m of architectural and urban heritage, natural monuments and sites in nature reserves. For example: Lac des Settons
  • Lac de Saint-Agnan, Lac de Chamboux and Lac de Pannecière (drinking water reserves)
  • Tourbières du Morvan Regional Nature Reserve
  • Zones subject to municipal by-laws or the PLU

Good to know: The absence of a sign does not always mean that bivouacking is authorised. Check with your local council or on site.

Why not opt for a campsite?

Even if bivouacking remains a great way of experiencing nature in a free and light-hearted way, it is always preferable - where possible - to choose a campsite or motorhome park.

In the Morvan, a large number of campsites on a human scale welcome you in a friendly setting, often close to hiking trails, with real comfort and less impact on the environment.

It's insurance:
