Bivouacking in the Morvan
Looking for adventure, raw nature and starry nights away from the crowds? The Morvan offers exceptional scenery for an unforgettable bivouac experience... as long as you follow a few simple rules.

Practical information
What is a bivouac?
A bivouac is a night spent out in the open, without any permanent structures: a light tent, pitched after sunset and dismantled before sunrise, in an inconspicuous spot, for a single night.
This is not wild camping! The latter often involves heavier installations and prolonged parking, and can have a negative impact on the environment.
Bivouacking is a great way to discover the Morvan in depth... as long as you do it with discretion, respect and common sense.

Where to bivouac in the Morvan?
Bivouacs are permitted in the Morvan, with the agreement of the landowner, except in certain protected or regulated areas.
Areas where bivouacking is prohibited:
- In listed or registered sites and in areas where historic monuments are protected, within 500m of architectural and urban heritage, natural monuments and sites in nature reserves. For example: Lac des Settons
- Lac de Saint-Agnan, Lac de Chamboux and Lac de Pannecière (drinking water reserves)
- Tourbières du Morvan Regional Nature Reserve
- Zones subject to municipal by-laws or the PLU
Good to know: The absence of a sign does not always mean that bivouacking is authorised. Check with your local council or on site.
Eco-bivouac sites in the Morvan
A number of eco-bivouac sites have been specially developed in the Morvan to reconcile the freedom of roaming with respect for nature. These sites, designed for hikers, cyclists and light bivouac enthusiasts, allow you to spend a night in the heart of nature in simple but environmentally-friendly conditions.
Why not opt for a campsite?
Even if bivouacking remains a great way of experiencing nature in a free and light-hearted way, it is always preferable - where possible - to choose a campsite or motorhome park.
In the Morvan, a large number of campsites on a human scale welcome you in a friendly setting, often close to hiking trails, with real comfort and less impact on the environment.
It's insurance:
- A secure, authorised reception area
- Useful services (toilets, drinking water, waste separation)
- And to contribute to local vitality
