A starry sky as a driver for sustainable tourism. The Morvan Regional Nature Park – and especially the southern area around the Community of Communes Morvan Sommets et Grands Lacs – has officially joined the exclusive group of International Dark Sky Reserves (IDSR) in France. This prestigious designation crowns nearly a decade of commitment to protecting the nighttime environment.
Thanks to the joint efforts of local municipalities, energy syndicates, scientists, associations, and residents, light pollution has been significantly reduced. Today, nearly 100% of public lighting in the core zone is switched off during the night, resulting in a dark and pristine sky – perfect for astronomical observation.
Stargazing in a Natural Planetarium
In the heart of the forests, lakes, and hills of Morvan Sommets et Grands Lacs, far from urban light, the Milky Way can once again be seen with the naked eye. This preserved territory is becoming a prime destination for those seeking peace, nature, and wonder.
Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy a range of nighttime activities: guided stargazing walks, observation evenings, night photography workshops, storytelling under the stars… A new public observatory is also under construction in Château-Chinon, featuring a planetarium and large telescope, opening up the universe to all.
Nighttime: A Precious Resource for Nature and People
Protecting the night also means preserving biodiversity. Many nocturnal species – such as bats, owls, and insects – benefit from more natural conditions. Reducing artificial lighting also helps save energy and raises awareness among residents and visitors about the importance of respectful nighttime practices.
This collective project, led by a wide range of local stakeholders, makes the Morvan a model for responsible lighting and sustainable tourism. With the RICE label now in place, the region affirms its commitment and invites everyone to rediscover the starry sky – as a heritage worth protecting… and enjoying.
