The Saut de Gouloux

In the commune of Gouloux, 5 km north-east of Saint-Brisson, the Saut de Gouloux (Gouloux Falls) is an important tourist site. Here a stream called ‘le Caillot’ tumbles into an old rift which created an overhang, and becomes a 10-metre-high fall. These falls, in the depths of the forest, are not seen from the road. You find them little by little thanks to the sound of water that grows louder as you approach. The path leading to it is edged with old moss-covered low walls, broad-leaved trees and conifers. This gives the place a wild and natural character. A sound hut was built by the river to amplify these ‘gurgles of white waters’. Next to the falls, you will see beautiful granite walls. They are the ruins of two old mills—one of them was used to produce flour and the other oil. This place is also the site of a former timber-floating port, dating from the time when the Morvan supplied Paris with firewood and logs were sent up on the rivers Cure and Yonne. Signs on the site allow you to discover the history of the place. A parking place and a restaurant have been built for your pleasure. ##
